Back Pain Treatment Huddersfield

Is your persistent back pain keeping you from enjoying everyday activities, affecting your mood and sleep and leaving you frustrated and helpless?

If you’ve got sharp, stabbing, or persistent back pain that seems to linger, it’s easy to just accept it, carry on with your life, and think it’s something that “comes with age” or think “it happens because of poor posture”. You might have days when your back pain eases, and you feel hopeful, thinking it’s finally over.

But soon enough, the pain returns, sometimes even worse than before. You start wondering, “Why is this lasting so long?” “Will it ever get better?” “Why is this happening to me?”

We understand how frustrating and debilitating this can be, affecting your mood, energy, and daily activities. Whether it’s caused by a muscle strain from lifting something heavy, a herniated disc from a sudden movement, arthritis, or even poor posture, back pain can disrupt your life in many ways.

You’re not alone – we hear these concerns every day at Pro Sport Physiotherapy. We also know that back pain isn’t just something that happens with age. It can result from injuries, medical conditions, or lifestyle factors. We’re here to help you find relief and get back to living your life pain-free.

Conditions We Treat

Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition characterised by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. It typically occurs when the nerve is compressed or irritated in the lower back. The pain is usually felt on one side of the body and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain. In addition to pain, sciatica may cause numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, occurs when the soft center (nucleus) of an intervertebral disc pushes through a tear or rupture in the tougher outer layer (annulus) of the disc. This can put pressure on nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness, especially in the back, neck, arms, or legs, depending on the location of the herniation. Herniated discs most commonly occur in the lower back (lumbar spine) but can also happen in the neck (cervical spine). Herniated discs can be caused by a number of reasons, the most common include wear and tear, excessive or repetitive strain and physical inactivity. Physiotherapy can help strengthen muscles around the disc while providing pain management strategies.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) refers to the gradual deterioration of the intervertebral discs in the spine due to ageing or wear and tear. These discs act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) of the spine, and as they break down, they lose their flexibility and ability to absorb shock. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and in some cases, nerve compression, resulting in back pain, radiating leg pain, or numbness.

Lower back pain

Lower back pain refers to discomfort or pain in the lumbar region of the body. This can vary from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp sensation and may be acute (lasting a few days to weeks) or chronic (lasting longer than three months). Causes of lower back pain include muscle strains, herniated discs, poor posture, arthritis, or injuries. It is a common condition and can sometimes be accompanied by symptoms like stiffness, reduced mobility, or leg pain.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a medical condition characterised by an abnormal, sideways curvature of the spine. Instead of being straight, the spine curves in an “S” or “C” shape. Scoliosis can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed at birth or during adolescents. While mild cases may not cause significant issues, more severe cases can lead to back pain, uneven shoulders or hips. Physiotherapy can be beneficial to prevent other muscle compensating which will prevent further injuries.

Postural Back Pain

Postural Back Pain refers to pain that results from poor posture or prolonged exposure to certain positions that place strain on the muscles and ligaments of the back. Staying in one position for extended periods, can lead to muscle fatigue and discomfort, particularly in the lower and upper back. Changing your posture and ergonomics often helps alleviate this type of pain.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction occurs when the sacroiliac (SI) joints, located at the base of the spine where the sacrum connects to the pelvis, become irritated or stiff. This can cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, and sometimes radiating pain down the legs. SI joint dysfunction may result from injury, arthritis, pregnancy, or uneven movement patterns. SIJ dysfunction can occur in different types of back pain and can be corrected through courses of physiotherapy.

Testimonials

“I 100% recommend this clinic! Their approach to my treatment was really good, combining hands on treatment and giving me confidence to build up my own exercises. They understood my priorities (getting back to work and getting back to CrossFit) and I was able to achieve these. The holistic approach they take and focus on mental attitude has helped me in many areas of my life. Thanks to Dave and Shane I have confidence in my movement and the resilience of my body that I didn't have before. The reception staff are friendly and welcoming.” Gillian Murray
“I initially used ProSport Physiotherapy (PSP) to help with an upper back issue which was causing pain in my arm and chest. What I like about PSP, and what I believe sets them apart from others I have used, is that, following an in-depth assessment, they put long term steps in place to tackle the root cause of the issue supported with videos of the recommended exercises. My upper back issue is now resolved. I am now working with them to tackle a long term lower back problem and am already seeing benefits.” Grassy MTB
“I would highly recommend ProSport Physiotherapy. After several years of recurring lower back pain and seeing numerous chiropractors and osteopaths with no success, ProSport have not only managed to get me out of pain and give me full mobility back, they have also addressed the root cause. Meaning no more back pain in the future and having to take unnecessary time off work. So thank you ProSport physiotherapy you have changed my life.” Sunny Sangha

FAQ Back pain

What are some common back injuries?

Common back injuries include sciatica, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, lower back pain, scoliosis, postural back pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and muscle strain. These conditions can vary from mild discomfort to severe pain and may require physiotherapy for treatment. Early intervention and proper management can help prevent further complications.

What should I expect during a physiotherapy session for back pain?

During a physiotherapy session for back pain, you can expect an initial assessment where the physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and daily activities. They may perform physical tests to assess your movement, posture, and the source of your pain. Based on the assessment, the physiotherapist will create a personalised treatment plan that may include manual therapy, exercises, stretches, and advice on posture and lifestyle modifications to help reduce pain and improve mobility.

Can a physical therapist fix lower back pain?

Physiotherapy can help fix lower back pain by providing tried and tested strategies which helps eliminate the pain. The therapist may provide hands on treatment or exercise which targets specific muscles to reduce the pain sensation.

How to tell if lower back pain is muscle or disc?

Now as physiotherapists we don’t have X-Ray vision so we can’t see what’s happening in the back. However through specific tests and the information you tell us we can have a good understanding of what your lower back pain is. Even if your back pain is disc related we’ll still treat you using our Pro-Sport approach.

Which therapy is best for lower back pain?

There is no set one therapy which could be good for your lower back pain. Sometimes you might need a combination of hands on therapy, massage and exercise therapy and this may vary from session to session.  However your therapist will communicate with you which type you need more of.

How long does it take to see results for back pain treatment?

While every case is unique, many of our patients experience significant improvement within 3-6 sessions. We’ll provide a realistic timeline based on your specific condition during your first appointment.
